The royal family and the Netherlands

“People make companies”. The Könighaus headquarters are located in Emmerich am Rhein, close to the border with the Netherlands. The nearest major city is Arnhem. Many of the employees either have family roots in the Netherlands or have spent their student life there.

We particularly appreciate our Dutch neighbors for their technological progress and acceptance. Digital payment, infrastructure, household electronics and the early adaptation of fashion trends speak for themselves. However, the last point does not fall under the heading of technology. Interest in “infrared heaters” has also increased in terms of heating. A look at Google Trends shows a clear peak in interest in September last year.

The Google trend shows that search queries for infrared heaters have increased significantly since August last year.

Advantages of infrared heaters

  • One of the biggest advantages of infrared heaters is their high energy efficiency. One unit of electricity is almost completely converted into one unit of heat.
  • Good for your health: House dust allergy sufferers in particular confirm the beneficial effect of infrared. Thanks to its direct heat, no air – including dust – is stirred up in the room. And that’s not all. Infrared heaters can also be useful in physiotherapy. The heat stimulates blood circulation and oxygen transport, relieves pain and relaxes muscles.
  • The heating effect is particularly pleasant and just as fast. While underfloor heating takes almost a few hours to really get going, infrared heating reacts quickly. It reaches operating temperature in less than 5 minutes. The so-called direct heat ensures that the heat reaches you without the detour of heating the air. In general, the direct heat principle works in such a way that the radiation provides heat on contact with objects, surfaces or people. Convection heaters, on the other hand, first heat the air before it transfers the heat to the objects, surfaces and people in question.
  • Simple installation or as a free-standing appliance (no installation required). Especially during the gas crisis, interest in electricity-powered heaters has increased enormously. The ease of use makes infrared heaters a quick and long-term heating alternative.

Gas production in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has been extracting its own natural gas from the North Sea for decades. As it is located directly at the source, the gas has been used almost everywhere for heating and cooking. A look at the statistics shows that almost 85% of Dutch households heated with natural gas in 2019.

Gas production in the Netherlands is to be discontinued. This is due to artificial earthquakes caused by natural gas extraction. Small and medium-sized earthquakes have caused severe damage to residential buildings in some cases. As a result, there have been calls from the population for natural gas production to be stopped.

Groningen is home to the largest natural gas reserves in Europe. Around 10 years ago, there was a particularly violent earthquake here (magnitude 3.6 – the strongest ever measured in the Netherlands). This damaged 26,000 houses. In addition to the material damage, it is still a psychological burden for the residents. It was this event in particular that caused a rethink.

For the transitional period (abandonment of gas production in Groningen), gas imports from Russia were used, among other things. However, the imported volume was low in relation to national consumption. In this respect, there was no strong dependency. As the Netherlands refused to pay for Russian gas supplies in roubles, Russia stopped supplying gas.

The Dutch reserve the right to resume gas production in the event of a real emergency. There is also a growing awareness among the population that a gas shortage in Europe – triggered by the war against Ukraine – could constitute such an emergency.

How does the Netherlands obtain its gas today? Shortly after the Russian invasion, the Netherlands began building liquefied natural gas terminals, which come from Texas, for example. Thanks to the new infrastructure, more gas can be imported than is needed. This means that other European countries can also be supplied.

Conclusion

Könighaus has its own Dutch webshop. Thanks to our headquarters close to the border, our competent customer service team speaks both German and Dutch. Visit us at www.koenighaus-infrarood.nl. The Dutch are also making things exciting when it comes to the energy transition. We are delighted that our infrared heaters, which can be operated with 100% green electricity, are also enjoying such international popularity.
