The days of the environment

Back to overview

You have to celebrate the festivals as they fall, as the saying goes. And at the moment, a few days fall under the theme of the environment. On the one hand, there is World Environment Day, on the other, Oceans Day and, not to be neglected, Wind Day. In this blog post, we take a look at why these days exist and why they are celebrated at the Royal Household. Dive into this post and celebrate “The Days of the Environment” with us.

June 5, 2022: World Environment Day

Did you know that the first World Environment Day was celebrated back in 1972? So this year we are celebrating its 40th anniversary. A few years after this globally celebrated day was founded, the first campaigns were also held in Germany. Campaigns to raise environmental awareness. The aim is to promote recycling and counteract the destruction of nature.

The documentary Home – the story of a journey was released on World Environment Day, in 2009 to be precise. Parisian photographer and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand flies around the world with his team. He uses means of transport such as hot air balloons, helicopters and airplanes to show the world from above. He draws attention to the beauty of nature, traditional agriculture and the living conditions of the people.

The filmmaker also shows the changes within nature. He shows how waterways are becoming narrower over time, leading to droughts, and how more and more oil and coal is being extracted due to the high demand for energy and consumer habits. And it shows the contrast: progressive countries like Spain that are harnessing the sun. Solar energy – which has no harmful effects on the environment.

If you are also interested in the documentary, we have included the link in the source information below. It is definitely a recommendation from us.

And that is precisely why we also celebrate World Environment Day. It is important to strike a balance between our own needs and environmental protection. Heating is also one of our basic needs. Sometimes we have the choice of obtaining energy in a way that conserves resources, such as from the sun. One of the reasons why we are so enthusiastic about infrared heating is that it is highly compatible with photovoltaic systems and runs on solar energy.

June 8, 2022: World Oceans Day

Compared to World Environment Day, Oceans Day is a more recent holiday. This celebration originated in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It was created to call for the protection of the blue part of our planet. We ourselves and many generations to come are dependent on the sea. This day is therefore a reminder to use the resources of the sea responsibly.

Why is the sea so important for us? Well, the sea is our biggest supplier of oxygen. We get a good two thirds of our oxygen from the oceans. We also get some of our food from the sea. But raw materials are also extracted from the oceans. For example, crude oil. Crude oil is a fossil fuel, the extraction of which is considered harmful to the environment.

The Day of the Sea is also interesting in terms of heating. The crude oil just mentioned is used to produce heating oil, among other things. The formation of crude oil can take up to several million years. And since the formation process takes just as long, it is all the more damaging to the oceans to extract it at a rapid pace.

As a big supporter of green energy, we are celebrating World Oceans Day with the United Nations. If you would like to delve deeper into the topic of fossil fuels, then take a look at this article: Fossil fuels: from crude oil to oil heating. It gives you detailed information on why heating with oil is questionable and also risky for the environment and the sea.

June 15, 2022: Day of the wind

The Day of the Wind or Global Wind Day is now celebrated worldwide. Over 30 countries on 4 continents take part in the campaign. The holiday was introduced by the wind energy industry around 2007. The aim of the day is to inform the public about the importance of wind energy. Companies from the energy sector offer various activities such as kite flying, tours of windmills or entire wind farms.

We would also like to use the Day of the Wind to draw attention to sustainable power supply. Wind energy is a renewable energy source alongside solar, water and bioenergy. You can operate your Könighaus infrared heater with 100% renewable electricity. There are noCO2 emissions during heating operation. The situation is different with alternative heat sources such as heating with oil and gas. The resource-saving option of heating is the origin of our enthusiasm for infrared heating.

Why the royal family celebrates the Days of the Environment

As these three special days take place shortly after each other, we have decided to bundle them together and celebrate the Days of the Environment. We also like the chronology of the days. First the world as a whole, then the oceans and finally to honor the wind. The above-mentioned documentary Home has probably reminded some of us of the beauty of nature.

Each of us can pay attention to a few things in everyday life. The simplest thing you can do is to eliminate waste. One place to start is with food and cosmetics that end up unused in the bin. Did you spend a little too much at the supermarket last time? Then why not give some of your food away to friends and family? You’ll be doing the environment a big favor with little things like this.

Are you interested in saving energy in the home? Then take a look here. In this article you will find useful everyday tips on saving energy. The great thing about it is that two people always benefit. On the one hand you, as you use less energy and therefore pay less for it. And on the other hand the environment, from which fewer resources are taken.

You can also increase efficiency when heating. If you heat with infrared, we recommend using a thermostat. This allows you to set the exact temperature you want. When the target temperature is reached, all you have to do is maintain it. The built-in detection of open windows is also useful. Whenever your thermostat detects an open window, the infrared heater is stopped. And that brings us back to eliminating waste.

Conclusion

Nature holds an uncanny beauty. These three important holidays are held to commemorate the preservation and protection of the environment. World Environment Day is celebrated alongside Oceans Day and Wind Day. As these days are also thought-provoking, we want to do our bit and have created the Environment Days.
